Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue

Something old, new, borrowed and blue belongs to the Bride of Christ. Join us as we discover the gifts of apparel with which Christ blesses His Bride.

We have been talking this month about the apparel of the Bride of Christ and what an eye opening experience it has been! We have discussed the ring, the crown and now this week I would love to talk about the popular wedding apparel tradition – Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue!

I do not know if the old, new, borrowed, blue tradition is done all over the country by every bride, but here in the South, it is guaranteed…..almost an unwritten law!

As Christians, Jesus views us as His Bride, the Bride of Christ. Just like a regular bride, Jesus gives us wonderful gifts and traditions too. However, since He is the Son of the creator of the universe, His gifts are not merely material items for our pleasure. Instead, Jesus gives us Brides spiritual gifts for our hearts.

Let’s visit the Bridal dressing room and see what our Bridegroom has for us!

Something Old

Our “something old” gift is the Old Testament. It is the history of our inheritance and the lay out of our story. It foretells the birth of our Bridegroom and the story of His life.  Ruth talks of a kindsman redeemer for herself as well as for us through Jesus. Daniel said that Jesus would be the Son of Man. Exodus explains that Jesus would be the Passover Lamb. We are allowed to see the glimpses of what was to come through these powerful chapters of the Old Testament.

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law of the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17

Something New

This is our new life in Him. By Jesus dying on the cross for our sins, we have been saved from an eternal death if we will surrender our lives to Him. Becoming a Christian betrothes us to Jesus and makes us the Bride of Christ. We are given a spiritual new heart, new life and new purpose. These are the best “new things” I could ever imagine!

Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Colossians 3:9-10

Something Borrowed

I kind of struggled with this one as they did not seem to be anything in the Bible that our Bridegroom let’s us borrow. He does not loan, instead He gives. However, I came across so information about Samuel which suggested that he was was borrowed from God and loaned back to Him. Is that concept not true for you and me too? Until the moment of conception, our life belongs to God. At that point, He gives us a free will and allows us to “borrow” our life from Him. We are not required to loan it back to Him while on this earth by surrendering our hearts to Him. However, that is what He hopes we will do because He loves us so much and desperately wants to be our Bridegroom.

Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave th right to become children of God. Children born not of natural descent , nor of human decision or a husband’s will but born of God. John 1:12-13

Something Blue

I love this! Our Bridegroom is the Son of the creator of everything. What belongs to the Father, belongs to the Son. Therefore, our Bridegroom gives us blue…beautiful blue for our soul, spirit and emotions. We get the mighty ocean, the vast sky, the delicate bluebird and the radiant sapphire. Our Bridegroom knows that we are human so he appeals to our eyes, ears and feelings with His amazing gifts!

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land”  and the gathered waters He called  “seas”. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1::9

Think About This

You know, the more I learn about God and the closer I get to Him, the more I see that every little thing that we do in our every day lives points back to Him. The hand of our Bridegroom is everywhere. He is in landscapes, circumstances, grocery stores, hidden places and yes…even wedding traditions!

Our Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, will provide for our every need. He clothes His bride with strength and dignity. Proverbs 31:25. It is His greatest joy to meet your every need. Do you have a need that you feel like Jesus has not met? Look around you and really focus. The four gifts mentioned above have been here just waiting for every Bride to claim. Has your need already been met but you do not see it yet? Start praying for for spiritual eyes and revelation. Your Bridegroom does not hide from you nor does He hide His good things from you. Sometimes, we just need help to see them.
