Hey there, Bride of Christ! What an exciting month it has been talking about the apparel of the Bride! Who knew there was so much to learn? If you have missed any of the articles you can catch up here. So far we have talked about the ring, crown, bridal apparel tradition and today we are going to cover the most important piece of bridal apparel for the Bride of Chirst…the dress.
Fun Wedding Dress Facts
The wedding dress has a rich history. Queen Victoria supposedly started the white wedding dress tradition in the Western world in the 1840s when she was married in a white dress. Before that, women were simply married in their best dress. This is why your grandmother probably told you marry in black, wish yourself back!
According to theknot.com, the average wedding dress cost for brides in 2016 was $1564! Are you as surprised as I am about that cost?! I have worked in the wedding market for almost sixteen years but I had no idea that the cost of a dress had skyrocketed to that level.
The site also said that in 2016, the average engagement period was fifteen months and that most brides-to-be are purchasing their dresses fifteen months before their wedding. Meaning that future brides are buying their dresses within the first month of being engaged. These girls are on the ball!
Being a floral designer for so long, I have hand a hand in planning many, many weddings. In the South, a wedding is a big deal so there is a LOT of planning involved! When a bride comes to us to start the process of choosing her flowers, one of the first questions we always ask is what does your dress look like?
What color is it?
How old you describe the style?
Is there any beading or accent colors?
These questions are important because the dress sets the tone for the wedding. It is the focal point by which the rest of wedding details are determined. The dress sets the stage for the feel and look of the wedding. It gives the wedding life and makes it real.
White As Snow
What gives you life and makes you real? You answer may range from your career to your family to your outdoor hobbies. However, the only thing that can truly give us life and make us real is the eternal life offered to us through the death of Jesus Christ.
We were filthy, scandalous sinners, clothed in rags and disgrace. There was no hope or future for us. Then two thousand years ago, Jeus Christ came to this earth as a baby, lived a perfect life and willingly gave it as a living sacrifice in order to offer us forgiveness of our sins and eternal life.
Have you accepted Jesus into your heart? If you have, then you have been cleansed from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9
You are clean. You are sparkling. You are as white as snow! You have been given a holy wedding dress that is pure white and you get to wear it every day for the rest of your life! Thank you Jesus!
Bible Days Fabric Talk
Clothing material is discussed a good bit in the Bible. Joseph had a coat designed with several colors. Lydia was the popular retailer of purple fabric. The tabernacle curtains as described in Exodus were four different colors. Clothing colors and materials were a big deal back then. However, I found this to be so incredible.
Proverbs 31:21- When it snows, she has no fear for her household ; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
That verse sounds to me like scarlet is the color of a safe, strong and protective material. If a mom can clothe her children in scarlet during the freezing temperatures of a snow storm in a Bible day house with a straw roof and not worry about their health and well being, then scarlet must be the most coveted material ever!
However, read this next verse!
Isaiah 1:18- “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as Crimson, they shall be like wool.”
Did you catch that? Proverbs insinuates that scarlet is the way to go and is the clothing standard for the greatest woman ever…the Proverbs 31 woman. However, Isaiah says that even the best material out there has no value in God’s eyes compared to what He can give us. Scarlet is so worthless, it is equal to our sin. Yet if we surrender our lives to Jesus, our sins will be washed, our hearts will be cleaned and we will be symbolically clothed in white. Our hearts will be white and free from sin and our lives will be dressed in white and marked as belonging to Jesus. Who doesn’t want that?
