Why You Do the Things You Do
Think back to your playground days. When you would gather together your little group, were you more likely to join a group of kids who wanted you rather than a group who did not want you? When you were in high school and college, you probably spent most of your time with people who wanted you around. Today, I am sure that you would choose to connect with people who want and value you for the person you are. The point is, no one likes to be in a situation where they are not wanted. That is a very lonely feeling. Often times, a person will do, say or be a certain way in order to feel wanted and accepted by that individual or group that they long to be a part of.
Have you been there? I know I have.
The Truth About Seduction
I was listening to a Beth Moore Bible study last week, and Beth said something that just paralyzed me. She said, “Seduction is the act of making us feel wanted.” In other words, seduction is not only coupled with sexual behavior. Anything that swings in front of us, appealing to our flesh’s desire to be wanted is a form of seduction.
What has seduced you in the past? What has caught your attention because it made you feel wanted?
I have been drawn in by the obvious answer, a boyfriend. However, I am much more often guilty of being seduced by other things that feed my need to feel wanted. I have poured out all of my time and energy into things like my job, my family, relationships…even this blog, all because they made me feel wanted. Needed. Important. Valuable.
Sister, can I just tell you like it is? Those things are distractions thrown into our paths by the Great Deceiver. He loves to tantalize our flesh with false satisfaction. Satan wants to keep us so busy chasing the things that make us feel good about ourselves, that we do not have the time or energy to pursue the One who wholly fulfills every need within us.
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. Matthew 6:2
This verse is about a different topic that what we are discussing today, but I believe that the end result is the same. If we spend our days doing what it takes to be honored, wanted or needed by other, then the reward and satisfaction that we get on this earth is all we will get. This kind of behavior and mindset does not have a Heavenly reward.
Promises For the Bride of Christ
Do you feel unwanted today, sister? If you have surrendered your heart to Jesus, then you are His Bride. He finds great joy and delight in you and, yes….He very much wants you! Even better, Jesus wants you unselfishly. He wants to give to you not take from you. He does not have a list of expectations that must be strictly followed in order for us to be wanted by Him. Our Bridegroom offers us grace. However, our Bridegroom does want our time and devotion. Satan wants to wear us thin running from one temporary satisfaction to another. If we fall into that trap, we will have nothing left to give Jesus. No time. No energy. No focus.
Instead, let’s end the idolatry of wanting to be wanted and accept that in Christ, we are wanted!
Break the Chain
Sister, please do not feel like you are in this wanting to be wanted boat alone. The truth is, I have been there so many times and I still can fall prey to Satan’s seducing whispers so easily. Can I encourage us both to go to battle against his evil lies and stop letting him rob our joy?
With Jesus on our side, we have the power within us to break these chains of seduction.
Romans 8:11- The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, He will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. -NIV
1 John 4:4- You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. -NIV
Being Wanted By Our Love
There is nothing greater than knowing that you are wanted, but knowing that you are wanted by the One who sees you every little moment and chooses to love you anyway….that is the ultimate!!! I hope that you have found encouragement and hope today. May you keep your eyes focused on The Lover of Your Soul and rest easy knowing that He wants you every moment.
