Do you have a “thing” that you really get hung up on regarding Christmas? Maybe you have to watch a specific movie during the holiday season or you are really focusing on volunteer work this year. Or is your “thing” food related? Is this the year that you are finally going to receive that compliment from Aunt Rosy about your pecan pie? Well, if any of these “things” describe you then pat yourself on the back! My “thing” this Christmas has not been near as impressive….my thing has been Christmas music!
Now before you laugh, let me explain. I have been a music lover since I was born. My mom said that even as a toddler, my favorite movie was Disney’s Fantasia! Since I have been listening to music and singing all of my life, I think I started missing the words I was singing. I have been habitually repeating lyrics without really realizing the depth of the words.
Last night while I was waiting for George and Mic to cook my supper (that would be George Foreman and Mic-rowave haha!) I was listening to Christmas music. O Come All Ye Faithful started to play and I stopped to listen….really listen.
“O come all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem…..
The music continued, but I felt like the whole room was on pause. There was so much truth and power packed into just those few words!
This song is calling for the faithful to be gathered. It is beckoning them to come. It goes on to describe the mindset that the faithful either have or should have. God’s faithful should be joyful and live triumphantly!
Wow, what a challenge during the holidays! This is the time of year when many of us are so spread thin, overscheduled and nearly out of money that the last thing we often think about is being joyful. How can we be full of joy when we still don’t have all of our gifts bought, we already know we are going to mess up the turkey and we have to spend Christmas day with “her”! You know what I’m talking about!
And triumphantly? Really? How can we be triumphant this Christmas when our kiddos are wanting to change their Santa list at the top of every hour and we’re trying to make room for the out of town guests without having to clean out the junk room, I mean guest room?!
Yeah, I am with you! This Christmas music thing is just not fitting into the 21st century lifestyle is it? Yet the next words changed everything.
O Come Ye To Bethlehem!
We have got to go back to where it all started!
Of course I am not saying that you have to pack your stuff and head off to the airport! I mean you have a pecan pie to master before Aunt Rosy shows up!
Instead, allow the music and the lyrics to take you back to your own personal Bethlehem this Christmas. Revisit the time and the place where Jesus was born in your heart. Relive the journey that you and Jesus have taken so far. Remember the victories, the struggles, the heartbreaks and the joys. You have a lot to celebrate this year!
Oh go to your own personal Bethlehem. Remind yourself of just how faithful Jesus has been to you. Give Him your faithfulness back in return. There you will find your joy and triumph and then you will not be able to stop yourself from adoring Him!
For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11 NKJ
I want to wish you a Merry Christmas full of blessings, joy, sweet memories and great food! (Southern girl’s got to throw that in, right?) I will be praying for you over the rest of the holiday season and I look forward to what God has in store for both of us in 2018!
I was truly blown away and humbled by how many participants we had in our first Christmas Giveaway! It was so fun to spend the week talking and connecting with so many incredible women!
